WHY DOES LA CHISPA EXIST?

We wanted a place where we could learn tango by actually dancing it.

Tango is not the easiest dance to learn. It is improvised, and there is an almost endless amount to discover in the music: the beats, the phrases, the vocals, the instruments — and the silences.

Then there are two people in a close embrace, listening and responding to each other, while navigating the same dance floor with everyone else.

You can learn the elements in a class. But at some point, you have to put them together.

There is also a gap between taking a class and feeling ready to find your way on a milonga floor. Práctica is where that gap begins to disappear.

It is a place to try things out, make mistakes, ask questions, experiment with the music, and discover what works. You learn by doing — and by doing it together.

“Self-expression is self-exposure.”

That's what La Chispa grew out of: the need for a free space to explore, experiment, learn through trial and error, improve, and have fun.

Not another formal dance school, but a place where people can develop their own tango and make something beautiful together.

It takes two.

WHO ARE WE?

La Chispa is run by a group of experienced tango dancers who volunteer their time: André, Asta, Becky, Iulia, Sabrina and Wouter.

We organize the weekly práctica and beginner classes, and regularly invite qualified tango teachers from Buenos Aires for workshops and guided prácticas.

And when summer comes, we take tango outside.

La Chispark is our open-air milonga — to enjoy dancing outdoors, to bring tango into the city, and to share it with people who might never otherwise step onto a tango floor.
